I was born in Lebanon in 1982 in the middle of the Civil War. I lived most of my childhood in Lebanon, and at the end of the war, moved with my family to Washington D.C. where my father was sent on a mission at the Lebanese Embassy.
Back to Lebanon, I completed my Secondary Education in Experimental Sciences at Saint Joseph School and my Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at Notre Dame University during the relatively peaceful gap of 1996 to 2004. For three years following graduation, I founded :. there for design … , a freelance design studio, was employed in the design department of Indevco Group, a Lebanese industrial development company, witnessed the 2005 serial bombings, participated in the 2005 serial demonstrations, toured Europe by train and experienced the Second Lebanon War in 2006. Gradually, I developed an interest in researching about the conflict in Lebanon through two areas that she had acquired most experience in: Communication Design and Politics.
In early 2007, I moved to London and completed my MA in Graphic Design at the London College of Communication. The MA thesis developed a transferable methodology for analysing socio-political graphics using a case-study survey of 200 contemporary graphics produced in Lebanon between 2005 and 2007. This method of researching visual culture reveals valuable information about the social and political conflicts within a society. Visual Politics was published on ////o/, an online resource documenting writings, projects, artworks and references on Lebanon.
Moving on to PhD at the London College of Communication, I will be using the conflict findings in the MA, build upon them and develop communication design methods for engaging social groups in Lebanon and minimising social and political conflict. The research will culminate in a transferable methodology beneficial for other international communities with similar conflicts. Presently, I am also working as lead designer with Uscreates, a social and collaborative design company in London. I finds this an enriching balance between theory and practice in the same field of study.
